CCAMS

Centralised code assignment and management system

CCAMS consists of a central server located at EUROCONTROL’s premises. It provides a unique code for general air traffic operating in the region. This server:

  • automatically selects and sends a code to all the units along the flight’s route, based on the information available from other NM systems;
  • responds to code requests received from air traffic control (ATC) units;
  • ensures a code conflict-free trajectory for the flight, allowing the code to be retained in the CCAMS area;
  • monitors code use to ensure safe and efficient operations.

COAC

Combined Air Operations Centre

The Combined Air Operations Centre at Uedem, Germany is responsible for all Air Policing matters in European NATO Airspace north of the Alps. This includes control of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing operation, where contributing nations take turns in providing Quick Reaction Alert forces for the three Baltic NATO members Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia; as well as NATO’s periodic Air Policing and Surveillance mission to Iceland.

GAT / OAT

General Air Traffic

Aircraft flying in EU airspace whose flights are conducted in accordance with the rules and procedures of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). These may include military flights for which ICAO rules satisfy their operational requirements.

Operations Air Traffic

Flights in EU airspace which do not comply with the provisions stated for GAT and for which rules and procedures have been specified by appropriate national authorities.

Most OAT flights are operated by military agencies.

ORCAM

Originating Region Code Assignment Method

ORCAM is based on the strategic allocation of sets of codes to individual States and on the alternate use of transit and local definitions of codes per participating area (PA). This allows the same codes to be used for transit in one PA and for local purposes in adjacent PAs. Together they cover the entire ICAO EUR Region.
